Inthe early 1970s, Córdova began her career as a leader in the Los Angeles gayand lesbian and feminist movements by becoming President of the Los Angeleschapter of the Daughters of Bilitis; founding the publication, ; and becoming HumanRights Editor and columnist for the . In 1973, she was akey organizer of the first National Lesbian Conference, and in 1981, shefounded the , currently thenation's largest and most comprehensive LGBT directory. Her collection includesorganizational records from publications she founded and several activistorganizations she led; manuscripts and clippings of articles and books shewrote; personal diaries and correspondence with former lovers. Her collectionalso includes extensive photo albums with detailed annotation documenting herlife and major events in the gay and lesbian liberation movement. The Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) were formed in 1955 in San Francisco by a group of women who wished to offer Lesbians an alternative social experience than the traditional Gay bar. The group also realized there was a need for education in both the general and Lesbian community about Gay rights and social inequality. Biography Jeanne Robert Córdova was born on July 18, 1948 in Bremerhaven, Germany. Daughter of Federico Benito and Joan McGuinness, Jeanne is one of twelve siblings. In the 1950s, the family immigrated to New York and eventually relocated to Southern California.
